Daly City, called the "Gateway to the Peninsula", is situated on the northern edge of San Mateo County. The city limits stretch from the San Fransisco bay (to the east) all the way to the Pacific Ocean (on the west). It is conveniently situated in the middle of two of the biggest job growth zones in California, the San Mateo and San Fransisco counties. Though the economy within the area is really diverse, the major sectors are within small business, retail and healthcare.

The retail sector makes up most of the economy of Daly City. Within its limits, there are three major shopping places, the largest of those is the Serramonte Center, having a total of 860,000 square feet of retail space. The Mission Street retail corridor, that borders San Francisco, and the Westlake shopping centre (that provides 620,000 square feet of retail space) are the other two main regional shopping places. The city has over 3.1 million square feet of retail space, and out of all the cities in the county Daly City has the biggest taxable retail sales.

The next largest sector in Daly City's financial system is in the medical industry. The biggest employer in the city is Seton Medical Center, who has around 1,500 employees. There are 357 beds in the hospital, and it holds the reputation for being one of the top medical facilities in the U.S. There are some other medical institutions in the area, like for instance the Physician's Medical Center, San Francisco Heart Institute, San Francisco Neuro-Skeletal Imaging Center, Spine Care Medical Group and Seton Medical Office. The most recent facility in the area is the Kaiser Permanente, which consists of 130,000 square feet of medical offices and clinics. It could be located at 395 Hickey Boulevard near the I-280.

The labour force in the area is usually well educated due to the nearness of educational institutes. Within a ten mile radius are six universities or colleges and an additional 12 more can be found in a 50-mile radius.

The population of Daly City is primarily over the age of 18, 78 percent with the median age being roughly thirty five. Surprisingly, only 12% of the population is over 60. Nearly 50 percent of the total labor force work in local jobs.
