Provo City, Utah is located practically 70 km south of the states biggest city, the city of Salt Lake. The city of Provo is situated along the Wasatch Front, that is a long chain of towns and cities situated towards the west of the Wasatch mountains. Provo serves as the county seat of Utah County and the principal city in the Provo-Orem metropolitan area population of 526,810. It is the third largest metro area within Utah State after Salt Lake City and Ogden-Clearfield.

Provo was named after Etienne Provost, a French-Canadian who explored the area in the year 1825. The Mormons created a community here in the latter part of the 1840s and the city of Provo was incorporated during the year 1849. Because of its abundance of fruit orchards and gardens, the city of Provo was called the "Garden City". Brigham Young Academy was founded within Provo in the year 1875. Later on, the academy became Brigham Young University (BYU), the biggest church-affiliated university in the US. The university has been really vital to the city of Provo. They have been growing hand-in-hand, supporting nationally significant sports and academic programs and a local high-technology industry.

The city of Provo hosts various local celebrations, the largest of which is America's Freedom Festival. It is one of the largest celebrations of American Independence in the country, with more than 30 events taking place during 21 days prior to and including the 4th of July. The Stadium of Fire Spectacular is the peak event, held at BYU's Cougar Stadium. One more main event is the annual WinterFest, a series of events starting with the December Christmas Parade in downtown Provo and ending with a Firework Finale on New Year Eve's.

The economy of the Provo region is diversified. The area has various software technology firms. Software firms situated in the Provo area including Novell, Inc., Corel and the famous Symantec.
