Cornwall City is situated on the St. Lawrence River within Eastern Ontario. Cornwall is the seat of the United Counties of Glengarry, Dundas and Stormont. Situated in the easternmost part of the province of Ontario, Cornwall city is on Highway 401 and the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor. People of the surrounding communities of Avonmore, St. Andrew's, Long Sault, Ingleside, Marintown, Glen Walter, Lancaster and Williamstown look to Cornwall as their urban center. To the south of Cornwall city lies the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne.

The city of Cornwall got its name from the English county of Cornwall. The city's flag and coat of arms both bear the duchy standard.

The city of Cornwall is situated roughly one hundred kilometres southeast of the national capital city of Ottawa, 400 kilometres northeast of Ontario's provincial capital of Toronto, 120 kilometres southwest of Montreal in the province of Quebec. Located along the 45th parallel, Cornwall City is a port-of-entry into Canada. The city of Cornwall is connected through Roosevelttown to the United States, via the Three Nations Crossing, situated in the Ontario portion of Akwesasne, and crossing the St. Lawrence River and Cornwall Island.

There were some huge manufacturing industries, consisting of Domtar's paper mill and Courtaulds Canada Inc.'s rayon manufacturing mill. These companies were major economic drivers within the area until they closed their doors in the past two decades. Pioneer Chemicals, previously Canadian Industries Limited, has operated a plant within the city of Cornwall since the 1930s.

Cornwall City now features a more diversified industrial base, with a mix of automotive, manufacturing, food processing, high tech, and call centres. At there call centers in the city of Cornwall, StarTek and Teleperformance each employ more than 300 individuals. The largest SCM distribution centre within Canada is situated in Cornwall City, employing nearly 1000 individuals at a gargantuan 1.5 million-square-foot facility. A distribution facility for Shopper's Drug Mart just opened in Cornwall's Business Park.

In the year 2009, Cornwall City Council voted to increase property taxes by 2.5% per household based on property assessments calculated during the year 2008. That very same year, the United Counties council voted for a 4.5% tax rate reduction.
