The biggest community within Ontario's Durham Region is the city of Bowmanville. Bowmanville City had it roots beginning when John Burk obtained the land, which was later sold to Lewis Lewis. Lewis afterward opened a local store that was bought by Charles Bowman, who built the towns very first post office. In the nineteenth century, the Crown granted a land program which resulted in the success of the Vanstone Mill.
