Sioux Falls (population 153,888) is a city within the state of South Dakota. It is the county seat of Minnehaha County. More than a quarter of South Dakota's total population lives in the greater Sioux Falls metropolitan area.

Settlement started in the mid-19th century when land speculators in what was then the Dakota Territory noticed the water power potential of the area along the Big Sioux River cascades. During 1876 Sioux Falls became incorporated as a town. In 1883 Sioux Falls was established as a city. This took place in the era of the railroads. Growth and prosperity accompanied the arrival of the railroad within the city of Sioux Falls. During the modern time, the economy of Sioux Falls was based on agricultural businesses. The establishment of the John Morrell meat packing plant kicked off the city's industrial era during 1909.

The city of Sioux Falls has more recently developed a diverse business economy, specially concentrating on retail, finance and health care. There are many finance companies operating in Sioux Falls, like for example Bank First, Citigroup, Great Western Bank, HSBC, Total Card Inc, Wells Fargo, Capital Card Services and Premier Bancard. The local health care providers are key employers in the city. Sanford Health is the largest employer in the city and the 2nd is Avera Health. Retail trade is a significant sector. Sioux falls is home to 3,200 retail outlets hiring approximately 20 percent of the workforce.

The sectors of food processing and manufacturing are very essential to the city's economy. The numerous businesses of Sioux Falls produce things such as electronic test equipment, computer components, fabricated steel, concrete items and corrugated boxes Main manufacturing businesses include Hutchinson Technology, Bell Incorporated, Gage Brothers and John Morrel & Company.

The Great Bear Recreation Park is a great place for outdoor fanatics to enjoy some downhill and cross country skiing. They have more advanced and beginner slopes. The city's calendar of events includes a Jazz and Blues Festival held at Yankton Trail Park. Thousands go to this outdoor musical event held every July.
