Broken Arrow (population 98,850) is a city within the state of Oklahoma, USA. It is the largest suburb of Tulsa and is situated within Tulsa County, that is a small part of Broken Arrow is in Wagoner County. It is the fourth biggest city within the state of Oklahoma. The Tulsa Metropolitan Area, of which the city is a part, has a population of around 937,478.
Town lots were sold back in 1902 by the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. William S. Fears, the then secretary of the company, who chose the name Broken Arrow after an old Creek Indian community in Alabama. This community had a lot of members who were forced to move to that area of Oklahoma State along the Trail of Tears. The town's Indian name was Rekackv, which translates to broken arrow. The Creek settlement was located just south of the existing downtown Broken Arrow.
The city of Broken Arrow was first an agricultural community. Situated in the northeastern portion of Oklahoma State between the Great Plains and the Ozark Mountains, the area is part of the Green Country region, the most ecologically diverse area of the state. Seven of the state's 11 eco-regions are situated here. The scenery features hills, lakes and green vegetation.
At present, the economy of Broken Arrow is diverse. Many manufacturers have located here and Broken Arrow has many kinds of businesses and industries. The city has the third highest concentration of manufacturers in Oklahoma State.
FlightSafety International or also called FSI is the main private company, which designs and builds Flight Simulators at its Simulation Systems Division. They support as many as 675 engineers, that is 50% their employers. Commercial developments are underway at different places in Broken Arrow, such as along Highway 51. A Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World is the anchor to a major development that consists of hotels, restaurants, offices and shopping. During the year 2010, construction was completed on a new full-service hospital and medical office building. In 2011, Dick's Sporting Goods opened within the city.
