Yonkers is located just outside of New York City, about 2 miles north of the city of Manhattan. It is considered to be the most populated city within Westchester County and the 4th most inhabited city in the state with a population of roughly 195,976. The most inhabited cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester and New York.

Located in the city of Yonkers are numerous attractions, including the Hudson River Museum, the Sherwood House, the Science Barge, Cross County Shopping Center, Yonkers raceway and Ridge Hill Shopping Center. The raceway recently renovated during 2006, adding legalized video slot machine gambling and revitalizing its' clubhouse and grounds. There are several shopping areas scattered all around Central Park Avenue, which is usually known as "Central Ave" by the people who reside there.

In the latter part of the 1640's, the city's history begins when Adriaen Van der Donck received a land grant form the Dutch East India Company. On the location where the Nepperhan Creek intersects the Hudson River, Van der Donck constructed one of the region's first saw mills. Van der Donck was affectionately known as Jonk Herr, that translates to young nobleman. Eventually, his land became known as "Jonk Heer's land." The phrase developed into "the Younckers" and then lastly into Yonkers. Because of it's centralized place, the city of Yonkers quickly established itself as a main trading hub. Throughout the early history of the city it was predominantly an agricultural community, but it's waterfront location soon led to innovations in travel, that in turn accelerated the establishment of different businesses all over the city of Yonkers. There are some times throughout history where the city of Yonkers played a key part in carpet and hat manufacturing. In addition, it was the location of the globe's first elevated mass transit system. Yonkers was first incorporated in 1872 with a population of roughly 20,000.

With over $3 billion dollars in changes, Yonkers has recently put forth a proposal to revitalize the locality. The proposal consists of a lot of luxury housing, waterfront development, and a lot of retail and commercial space. The aim is to increase tourism and the economic significance of the city to the county and New York State.

There are several yearly events which draw thousands of people to the city every year. The Yonkers Hudson Riverfest, that offers a diverse selection of ethnic foods, crafts, and entertainment, attracts a crowd of more than 15,000 individuals. The Untermyer Performing Arts Festival performs each and every Saturday evening throughout the summer. The events, which comprise opera, dance, music and street theatre, are free and are held on the Hudson River. Also, the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra plays five times every year.
