The city of Gastonia, North Carolina are considered a suburb of the Charlotte Area. Gastonia is the third largest suburb of Charlotte behind Rock Hill and Concord. The city serves as the county seat of Gaston County and, with a population of approximately 71,059, is the largest city in the county. It is part of the Charlotte-Concord-Rock Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The population of Gastonia has been increasing steadily. During the past ten years the population has grown by 8.2%. The city's total land area is 46.1 square miles - 13 percent of the total area of Gaston County.

The county of Gaston and Gastonia are surrounded by a terrain of hills and mountains. The areas highest elevation could be located at King's Pinnacle and Crowder's Mountain. These peaks could be located just a short drive from downtown Gastonia, located in Crowder's Mountain State Park. The Park attracts outdoor fanatics from all around the Carolinas. There are opportunities for fishing, camping and hiking. The King's Pinnacle trail loops around the place of a former battlefield. Smaller mountains are located at the edges of the city.

Canoeing, whitewater rafting and kayaking could be experienced through the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Golfers have numerous terrific courses to enjoy in the area, such as the Linwood Springs Golf Club and Crowder's Mountain Golf Course. The fishing is great at Robinwood Lake and Cook's Fishing Lake. A marina is situated at Lake Wylie. Families like to visit Paramount's Carowinds Water and Theme Park for its entertainment events and rides.

The city's economy has gone through difficulties over the last decade. A lot of layoffs and closures have happened. The corporate headquarters for Parkdale Mills, an international textile business, was situated within the city of Gastonia and operated two production facilities in the region before moving production outside the US. Despite the downturn the city continues to have a relatively strong manufacturing sector.

Walmart has two stores in the city of Gastonia and Advance Auto Parts has six stores plus a distribution center. Gastonia manufacturers include Freightliner LLC, Wix Filtration Corp., Stabilus, Danaher Tool Group, Radici Group and Curtiss-Wright Controls Engineered Systems. Other major employers are government, education and health care, such as the City of Gastonia, the County of Gaston, the Gaston County Schools system and Gaston Memorial Hospital.
