Hickory (population 40,010) is located within the county of Catawba in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains within the U.S. state of North Carolina. The Metropolitan Statistical Area is the 4th largest within North Carolina with a population of 341,851. Hickory is part of a main furniture manufacturing region. Hickory is the cultural center of the Catawba River Valley. Hickory could be accessed via the Charlotte/Douglas Intl. Airport.

During the year 1750, the first settler, Henry Weidner, migrated to the region from Montgomery Pennsylvania together with his brother-in-law. They obtained thousands of acres of land that eventually became Hickory. Throughout the 1790's taverner Henry Robinson constructed a pub under a big hickory tree within Catawba County which led to the area being referred to as Hickory Tavern for the next 100 years. Hickory Tavern began to develop during the year 1859 when the railroad came. The local population grew considerably. By the year 1870 Hickory was incorporated. In 1891, Lenoir-Rhyne College was founded by Lutheran pastors.

The area around Hickory has numerous furniture making companies. Hickory Manufacturing Company (currently Hickory White) is one of the the nation's oldest manufacturing companies.

The "Miracle of Hickory", is among Hickory's important highlights. Within the year 1944, over the course of two and a half days, Hickory citizens and the March of Dimes managed to transform buildings that were part of a hospital and a summer camp into a facility for a devastating polio outbreak victims.

Hickory is the economic center of the Catawba River Valley. Not only does the region have among the country's top furniture manufacturers, it is also home to the makers of fiber optic cable. The headquarters of CommScope and Corning Cable Systems are situated there.

Readers Digest placed the city of Hickory 10th in a list of the top places to live and raise a family in the United States. Forbes Magazine named the whole Metropolitan Statistical Area as the 3rd best MSA in the country for business cost. Inc Magazine named the area one of the top entrepreneurial places for high-tech and conventional companies.

In Hickory, most employment is found in furniture and related products, healthcare, manufacturing, educational services, accommodation and food services, electrical equipment, appliances and construction and components. Professional, management and related occupations account for 31% of the labor force. One quarter of the labor force is employed in sales and office jobs. Material moving, production and transportation occupations provide 22% of jobs.
