The city of Worcester, Massachusetts serves as the county seat for the county of Worchester. The estimated population within the city was just over 181,000 based on the newest 2010 census, making it the second biggest city in New England. Boston, the largest city in New England, is situated around 40 miles towards the east and Springfield lies about 38 miles towards the southwest. The city's centralized location in Massachusetts has led to it being called the "Heart of the Commonwealth." The official symbol of the city of Worcester is a heart.

Along the border of Worchester are the communities of Grafton, Auburn, Holden, Leicester, Paxton, Millbury, West Boylston and Shrewsbury. Several people who like to escape the "big city" feeling choose to live in these smaller communities and travel to work within the metropolis during the day.

The Blackstone River runs beneath the center of the city beginning within Institute Park. Today, they seek to support an appreciation for the fine arts by offering education in metalwork, weaving, woodwork, enameling, jewelry-making and various other crafts.
