The city of Worcester, Massachusetts serves as the county seat for the county of Worchester. The estimated population within the city was just over 181,000 based on the newest 2010 census, making it the second biggest city in New England. Boston, the largest city in New England, is situated around 40 miles towards the east and Springfield lies about 38 miles towards the southwest. The city's centralized location in Massachusetts has led to it being called the "Heart of the Commonwealth." The official symbol of the city of Worcester is a heart.

Along the border of Worchester are the communities of Grafton, Auburn, Holden, Leicester, Paxton, Millbury, West Boylston and Shrewsbury. Several people who like to escape the "big city" feeling choose to live in these smaller communities and travel to work within the metropolis during the day.

The Blackstone River runs beneath the center of the city beginning within Institute Park. Emerging from beneath the foot of College Hill, the river continues to course through Quinsigamond Village and into Millbury. The center of the "Canal District" is Water Street, which was formerly known as the Blackstone Canal.

There is a diverse economy in the city of Worchester with science and technology playing a large role within the city. The innovated company Advanced Cell Technology, works on the development of stem cell research, and Abbott Laboratories, a top pharmaceutical manufacturing and research firm, have preferred to make their home in the biotech park by the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Located within the city of Worcester are many head office for financial institutions, including the Harleysville Worcester Insurance Company, which is the oldest insurance company based in Massachusetts. Other notable financial companies headquartered in the city of Worcester comprise Hanover Insurance and the Paul Revere Life Insurance Company, which is a subsidiary of Unum.

The leading employment sectors which do not relate to agriculture are: Education and Health Services, Trade, Transportation and Utilities, Government, Finance, Manufacturing and Leisure and Hospitality.

There are several culture and arts places offered by the city. Ecotarium, the American Antiquarian Society, The Foothills Theatre Company, The Higgins Armory Museum, Music Worcester, Musicians of the Old Post Road, the Worcester Art Museum, the Worcester History Museum and Opera Worcester are just a few of the cultural and education sites located in Worcester.

The neighboring cities of Boston, Massachusetts, Hartford, Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island likewise have numerous arts and cultural offerings. As Worcester has such a centralized location, these locations are a relatively short drive away.

The poetic spirit remains strong in the city due to the Worcester County Poetry Association. They support readings by national and local poets, Bloomsday, and conference and literary tours of Worcester. There are several local poets who have competed within the National Poetry Slam and have come out successful.

During the year 1865, the Worcester Employment Society was established. These days, the site has been transformed into the Worcester Center for Crafts, which offers professional level instruction to the Worcester community. The original purpose of the institution was to teach immigrants the abilities and skills they required to create and sell crafts. Today, they seek to support an appreciation for the fine arts by offering education in metalwork, weaving, woodwork, enameling, jewelry-making and various other crafts.
