The original settlement of Aurora was founded by Samuel and Joseph McCarty during the year 1837, and was called McCarty Mills. After it amalgamated together with the nearby town of West Aurora in 1857, the two communities amalgamated as one. Referred to as the "City of Lights," Aurora became the very first city within the United States to utilize electric lights during the year 1881 for lighting all of the streets within the city.
