Campus: Facilities, Residence and Location

The campus is situated at the Hatley Park National Historic Site. Royal Roads has the Cedar Building, the Hatley Castle, Mews Conference Centre, Sports Complex, Grant Building, Nixon Building, Swimming Pool, Arbutus Building, Gate House, Boat House, and the Millward Wing (of the Nixon Building). It also houses a small Canadian Military Museum. Hatley Castle has made some appearances in TV programs and movies, such as X-Men 2 and 3, and Smallville. The University accommodates around 150 students in its dormitories. Its two residences are the Millward and Nixon buildings, which are located in the main campus circle. It is near the Hatley Castle, library, cafeteria and the academic buildings of the campus.

The campus is smoke-free, co-educational, and very conducive for studying and relaxation. Some of the amenities include: Residence Phones, Internet, Computer Lounges (Nixon Residence), 24 hours Desk Services (Security and Reception Desk), Mail, Laundry and Parking.

Student Services and Student Life

The University offers the following services to its students: Writing Centre, Webmail, University Reception, Student Activities, Regulations and Policies, Ombudsman Services, International Student Resources, Hatley Park Gift Shop, Financial Aid & Awards, Disability Services, Counselling, Convocation, Continuing Studies, Career Enhancement, Bookstore, Alumni Relations, and Aboriginal Relations.

Registered students who have paid their student fees automatically become members of The Royal Roads University Student Association (RRUSA). This organization serves as the voice of the students with regard to issues, ongoing activities and events related to the well being and development of the students. Joining the organization has a lot of benefits. Here, students can vote in elections, join the organizations that are under the RRUSA, be nominated or nominate for the Executive or Council, and even hold office. Aside from this, there are other clubs students can choose from, such as the ACE-RR: Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship, Royal Roads, International & ESL Club, Royal Roads Music Group, RRRC: Royal Roads Running Club, and the RRUSA: Royal Roads Student Association.

Students who are into physical fitness can go to the RRU Recreation Centre. Some of its amenities and services include: two squash courts, keiser, apex, cardio equipment, aerobics studio, free weights, gymnasium, and personal trainers. They also have registered classes, such as Yoga, Pole Trix, Light House Academy of Dance, and Aikido. Students can also take advantage of drop in activities, such as Basketball, Indoor Soccer, Volleyball, Floor Hockey, Badminton, Core, ABC, and Spin Classes. For those who are into outdoor sports, they can also join the Trail Orientations for those into running and walking.

In 2008, the University was ranked number one for “Active and Collaborative Learning Experience”, second for “Level of Academic Challenge”, fourth for “Senior Year Student Satisfaction”, fifth for “Supportive Campus Environment”, 28th for “Student-Faculty Interaction”, 37th for “Enriching Educational Experience” by the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Also, the Globe and Mail Canadian University Report has given Royal Roads an overall grade of B+ in a student satisfaction survey.
