St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation Scholarships

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority offers scholarships for graduating high school students who are continuing in post-secondary studies in a conservation field (biology, ecology, geography, forestry, fish and wildlife etc.). Applicants must be from one of the schools within the jurisdiction of the SCRCA or live within the SCRCA region. The application deadline is May 31 (application form).

A.W. Campbell Memorial Scholarship

This award is presented in memory of Archibald Campbell. Mr. Campbell was born in 1888 and was a farmer and an ardent conservationist. Through his will, the Campbell farm (now known as the A.W. Campbell Conservation Area) was able to be purchased by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority so that future generations would be able to enjoy the forests and rolling landscape of his property. This scholarship was made possible through a donation to a trust fund by two private individuals.

Up to two candidates each year will receive $1,000.

Tony Stranak Conservation Scholarship

This award is presented in memory of Tony Stranak, former mayor of the Town of Dresden and past Conservation Authority Board member. The scholarship is funded through a trust fund established through donations from community organizations and municipalities in recognition of Mr. Stranak’s long years of community service.

One candidate each year will receive a $500 award.

Mary Jo Arnold Conservation Scholarship

Mary Jo Arnold was a summer employee of the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority who passed away as a result of a car accident on July 13, 2009. Mary Jo was a spirited young woman who had passion for life. In her memory, the Mary Jo Arnold Conservation Scholarship has been established through donations from family and friends. This scholarship will provide a lasting legacy which will help other young women in their pursuit of a post-secondary education in conservation.

One female candidate each year will receive a $500 award. These scholarships are provided by trust funds established through the St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation.

Criteria

  1. Academic Standing: marks over all courses completed in the previous three semesters or the last full year and current mid-term marks for non-semestered schools.
  2. Must be pursuing future education in a conservation/environmental field.
  3. Participation in conservation-related organizations and/or activities.
  4. Immediate families of staff and directors of the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority and the St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation are not eligible for this award.

Application Procedure

  1. Any student who is eligible is invited to submit an application for consideration.
  2. Along with the application, please include a letter(s) of reference.
  3. A committee, appointed by the Foundation Board of Directors of the St. Clair Region Conservation Foundation, will evaluate all nominees and select the winners. The decision of the Committee will be final.

  5. Successful applicants must provide proof of paid tuition if requested (i.e. copy of a receipt from the academic institution noted in their application) by October 1 of the year they receive the scholarship. Failure to provide a receipt will require re-payment of the scholarship funds.
