The Dr. Paul Schwann Humanitarian Award of $500.00 each will be awarded annually to one male and one female graduating student. These students must be Canadian citizens, and must attend a member-school within the RHSAA and must fulfill the criteria specified below.
Criteria for the Dr. Paul Schwann Humanitarian Award
- The recipient must be a graduating high school student who has completed grade 12 in four years or less, and who is entering a post-secondary institute in a health or science related field. For the purposes of this award, the term “health or science-related field” includes the following: Faculties/Colleges: Science, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Kinesiology, Physical Activity Studies, Nursing (four-year program), Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation Medicine, Athletic Therapy, Pharmacy, and Education (in a health or science-related discipline).
- Payment of the award will be made upon the provision to the RHSAA commissioner of proof of post-secondary enrolment.
- The applicants must have participated as an athlete or as an athletic trainer in RHSAA sanctioned sports throughout his/her high school years.
- If the student has attended the RHSAA member-school for all four high school years, he/she must have participated as an athlete or as an athletic trainer for at least three years.
- If the student has attended the RHSAA member-school for three high school years, he/she must have participated as an athlete or as an athletic trainer for all three years.
- If the student has attended the RHSAA member-school for two high school years, he/she must have participated as an athlete or as an athletic trainer for two years.
- Applicants must have an academic average of at least 70%, based upon graduation requirements set by Saskatchewan Learning and a minimum two 30-level science courses.
- The application must be accompanied by a complete, up-to-date resume.
- The application must be accompanied by two letters of reference.
- One must be from a high school teacher who has taught the applicant, or from a high school coach who has coached the applicant.
- The second must be from a member of the community, (excluding family or employee of school you attend), who can attest to the applicant’s contributions to the community at large.
- Letters of reference must contain comments addressing the applicant’s qualities in such humanitarian areas as respect for others, leadership, citizenship, contributions to the community at large and contributions to the school, or contributions to RHSAA athletics.
- The focus of this award is not intended to be the elite athlete(although such a person is not ruled out), but the individual who has contributed fully and freely to the welfare of teams, who has demonstrated a love of athletic competition, who has a desire to learn, and who has a desire to help others.
