Native Americans interested in becoming nurses face many challenges, including financial and educational barriers. Some students come from homes that have no running water or electricity. Many of them provide key financial support to their families, so attending school and not working is a hardship. The ultimate goal of Expanding Horizons in Nursing is to encourage these students to continue for advanced degrees and have a real impact on the health of Native Americans.
Through ANA’s nursing scholarships for undergraduate and advance degrees, the Sue Kutenplon Scholarship (a $2,500 scholarship awarded to one student each semester), and funding for board testing fees (typically $350 to $550), we’re easing the burden facing some Native American students applying for competitive nursing school environments, and putting them into professional roles even faster. With the help of the CTC Foundation, employees of Reed Elsevier and their RECares employee-donation program, ANA is ensuring that more Native American nurses remain in the community, to work in and around the reservations in the Southwest.
