Out for Education Scholarships

Our journey began in 1998 when PFLAG-Houston and the Houston Area Teen Coalition of Homosexuals (H.A.T.C.H.) united with a shared mission: to uplift LGBTQ+ youth in Houston. This powerful alliance led to the creation of the PFLAG/HATCH Youth Scholarship Foundation in 1999, marking the start of an incredible journey.

In 2013, we rebranded as Out for Education, a name that reflects our unwavering dedication to education and the LGBTQ+ community.

How do I apply?

To qualify for the initial selection process the student must submit the following by the deadline:

• A completed application;
• A current transcript emailed directly to us;
• An essay; and
• One letter of reference emailed directly to us.

OFE will judge each applicant’s completed application, overall achievements, and financial need. The selection committee will then make preliminary selections for finalists who will be invited to an interview. These finalists will be interviewed individually by a panel of community members and volunteers. Interview dates and location will be communicated at a later date.

The rest of your application materials should be emailed, no later than deadline to scholarship.

Who is eligible for scholarships?

In order to be eligible for a scholarship, you must meet the following qualifications:

• Identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or has parents that are members of the community,
• Attending or has attended a Houston-area (which includes Harris or a contiguous county) high school, college, or trade school,
• and have a GPA of at least 2.75 out of 4.0 GPA from current or last school attended.

When is the scholarship application available?
