Black Women in Sport Foundation (BWSF) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase the involvement of black women and girls in all aspects of sport, including athletics, coaching and administration. BWSF offers four (4) scholarships annually to matriculating female college students. Students must be enrolled at the time of award receipt. This year, BWSF will award the following four (4) scholarships to three (3) undergraduate and one (1) graduate full-time students.
The Madeline Kountze Dugger-Kelly Scholarship:
- $1000 awarded to an African American enrolled full-time in an accredited graduate program. The applicant should have played a sport in her undergraduate program and display the outstanding qualities of Madeline Kountze Dugger-Kelly.
The Angela Murphy Scholarship:
- $500 awarded to a graduating high school female senior who will be enrolled in an accredited college program full-time. The applicant must have participated in her high school’s athletic program and been involved in community service.
The Bernice Anastasia Ximines Smith Scholarship for Undergraduate Students:
- $1000 awarded to a sophomore or junior African American woman enrolled in the Temple University School of Communications and Theater and exhibits the spirit and accomplishments of Mrs. Smith.
The Lewis Danforth, Jr. Scholarship:
- $1000 awarded to a student enrolled full-time in an accredited undergraduate program. The applicant must be from and live within the Greater Philadelphia Area and demonstrate qualities of a good citizen.
The scholarship application guidelines are included with this letter. Please encourage all college-bound students to review the selection criteria and apply if eligible.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: All applications must be received no later than March 31 of each year.
Students must adhere to the selection criteria and compile an application complete with all required information. Only complete packages will be considered. Students may apply for all scholarships for which they qualify but can only receive one scholarship award. All applications will be screened and candidates will be selected for an interview.
