The DOE CSGF is open to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who plan full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. at an accredited U.S. university. We encourage applications from students in engineering and the physical, computer, mathematical or life sciences who meet the following eligibility requirements. The fellowship provides four years of support, but must be renewed each summer.
ELIGIBILITY
The following criteria will be used to determine the eligibility of those applying for DOE CSGF. Measured at the time of application, eligibility will be extended to:
- Undergraduate seniors
- Current master's degree students MUST enroll at a different institution for Ph.D. studies to begin the fall term coincident with the start of DOE CSGF funding
- First-year graduate students CANNOT have completed more than one year of coursework prior to DOE CSGF
application submission - Employed individuals
- Other, including those matriculating into graduate school
During the fellowship period, fellows are required to be enrolled as full-time graduate students at an accredited U.S. college or university and conduct research in areas of interest to the DOE. The summer should be spent conducting full-time research related to the completion of one's degree program, enrolled in classes or on a practicum assignment.
This equal opportunity program is open to all qualified persons without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or any other characteristics protected by law.
FREEDOM TO FOCUS ON RESEARCH: TA POLICY
The DOE CSGF program's support allows students to focus on academics and research without excessive teaching or other departmental support activities. The fellow’s department must waive any teaching requirements beyond one term.
ANNUAL RENEWAL AND AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS
Fellows must renew their appointment each year by submitting an online application that demonstrates:
- Their academic performance is acceptable
- They're progressing toward completing the approved program of study
- They've completed a practicum
- They're conducting research in areas of interest to the DOE
The fellow's status and how much funds are expected to be available can affect the award's length.
The DOE attempts to provide adequate funding to meet the costs of graduate school. Therefore the Krell Institute must approve in advance additional graduate responsibilities, such as a teaching assistantship. Fellows may accept scholarships, prizes and other payments (including veteran’s benefits) that do not require a service.
