Overview
The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association endeavors to promote health and safety within the mining industry. We believe that providing financial aid to students in the pursuit of education related to mine safety will result in safer mines and healthier environments within the mining industry.
To that end, we have instituted this scholarship program and encourage new generations to enter the mine safety and health profession. A financial award is given to eligible candidates to help defray their educational costs in a field related to mining health and safety.
Scope
This scholarship program is open to persons who are pursuing careers in the mining industry, safety and health-related fields. Scholarship awards are available in the following categories:
- High school graduates (graduating seniors) enrolled in a college or university degree program.
- Undergraduate students currently enrolled in a college or university degree program.
- Graduates of a college or university pursuing a graduate degree.
Application Requirements
Applicant must complete the application, which consists of the following:
- Transcript of grades for the last three years of completed education
- Financial disclosure
- Short Essay (200-300 words)
- List of extracurricular Activities
Mail original application on or before the May 1, 2026 deadline.
Selection Process
Committee members review applications and select qualified scholarship recipients based on demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, financial need, Grade Point Average (GPA), leadership, and future career interest in a mining-related field. The committee comes to a consensus and the successful applicant (s) will be notified by August 1, 2026.
Scholarship Award Amount
Award amount will vary based on scholarship funding and each individual application. All applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, or disability. The scholarship funding will be awarded and ready for fall semester of 2026. The funding is sent directly to the college or university; credited to the student’s financial account to be used only for the student’s tuition and books.
Applicant Qualifications:
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States. Other qualifications are that you must be:
- pursuing a degree in a mining-related major,
- pursuing a degree in health or safety in the mining industry.
You must complete and submit the Joseph A. HolmesSafety Association (JAHSA) Scholarship Application to be eligible for scholarship award consideration.
This application has been designed to fill out information via computer; however, you must print, and mail completed application by the May 1, 2026, deadline.
Applications received after the May 1, 2026, deadline will not be considered. Applications submitted with any missing information will be ineligible for scholarship consideration.
Awarding scholarship recipients will be notified by mail no later than July 15, 2026. For additional information please address your questions to mail@holmessafety.org.
Application Checklist
Prior to submitting your application use this checklist to ensure the required documents are completed, signed and enclosed. Do not leave any blank spaces, if a line item does not apply to you, you must mark the space with (N/A) for not applicable.
1. Complete all pages of the application.
2. Submit official transcript (s) for the last three years of completed education.
3. Submit a 200 to 300-word essay (typed, double-spaced, and in a 12-inch font) and explain how you intend to apply your education to help the mining industry.
4. Submit at least 2 Letters of Recommendation
5. Do not fold, staple, or paper clip application or other documents.
6. Do not copy on both sides of the application pages (single-sided only).
7. Do not add additional information other than items requested.
8. Attachment (s) must be marked Attachment A, Attachment B, etc.
9. Make a copy of all documents and keep a copy for your records.
10. Application must be mailed in an 8 x12 manila envelope or larger.
