The USMA offers two awards on an annual basis since 2017. Winners are announced in the USMA’s newsletter Metric Today.
Purpose
To promote the usage of SI units in US society, as well as to promote metric awareness and proper usage.
Opening and deadline
Applications will be accepted beginning on 1 October 2025 through 31 March 2026.
Award rules
- Two awards are available: 1) the National Metric Scholarship Award and 2) the National Metric Award.
- All judging and final decisions of awards (expected 31 July 2026) are the sole responsibility of the USMA.
- Only awardees will be contacted by email. All other applicants are encouraged to visit the USMA website to view the award status.
- A National Metric Award first-place winner is not eligible for two consecutive award years.
- Winners and the top finalists will receive free USMA membership for one year, which includes the Metric Today newsletter.
- USMA award announcements and promotions will include the winners’ names and cities.
- AI-written award essays are not permitted and will disqualify the application.
- Objective evidence of metric activity is required in the application process.
Sponsor information
Funding for these awards is provided by USMA dues-paying members and other metric advocates, to increase metric awareness and usage in the US.
National Metric Scholarship Award
High school seniors this opportunity is for you! The National Metric Scholarship Award is exclusively open to US high school senior students who demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting metric awareness and usage.
Win a $2500 scholarship to be applied to tuition payments for a two- or four-year undergraduate degree. Second-place winners will receive $1000.

US high school senior students (only) are eligible to apply for the USMA National Metric Scholarship Award. Be sure to select the student scholarship category when applying.
