Phi Alpha Theta Doctoral Student Scholarship

Phi Alpha Theta is pleased to announce the continuation of its annual Doctoral Student Scholarship program for advanced study by graduate student members who are pursuing a Ph.D. in History or Library Science-Archives and who have passed general examinations by February 16, 2026.  Applicant must be a verified member of Phi Alpha Theta and will be considered for one of the following three awards:

• The John T. Maple Scholarship of $1,000
• The John Pine Memorial Award of $1,000
• Two additional awards of $850 each

For your application to be complete it must include the following:

• Application
• Official transcripts (one official copy from the institution that conferred the baccalaureate degree and from each institution in which graduate work was undertaken)
• Curriculum Vitae or resume
• Writing sample (5 pages, double-spaced)
• Letter of recommendation from each of the 3 individuals listed above (only the original)
• Dissertation prospectus of no more than 3 double-spaced pages

Letter from the History Department Chair confirming the applicant is not enrolled in an online degree program

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all required documentation is received by the competition deadline. Incomplete applications or those submitted after the deadline or by individuals whose membership in Phi Alpha Theta cannot be verified will not be considered for the competition.
