Most college students have seen headlines regarding the legalization of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) sports deals in the NCAA, which allow student-athletes to receive compensation for their likeability as an athlete. Athletes using their compensation to pay for college and receiving money in what is known as a pay-for-play deal have been topics of controversy with the inclusion of the NIL deals.
Attorney Chelsie King Garza is offering a scholarship to spread awareness of the impact of NIL deals on student-athletes and to encourage students, faculty, and administrators to voice their opinions on whether or not NIL deals should be available to athletes. The $1,000 scholarship essay contest is open to any student who will be enrolled in an accredited college or university in February 2023, or who will have been accepted to a college or university by that date.
To apply for this scholarship, please write a 500-word essay that discusses whether or not NIL deals should proceed to be available to college student-athletes and explain why you chose that position.
