Rules
1. Candidates for this award shall be a resident of Texas and a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a veteran who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion.
- April 6, 1917 through November 11, 1918 (WWI)
- Any time after December 12, 1941 - All Wars/Conflicts
2. Selection of recipients shall be based upon goal, character, citizenship, need, objective, and the war service of father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, great-grandfather, or great-grandmother.
3. High School Student Applicant must be in his/her Senior year of High School for the 2025-2026 year.
4. College Student Applicants must be full-time students (12 hours per semester) and attending consecutive semesters.
5. Judging, at all levels, shall be on the following basis:
- Character/Leadership 25%
- Initiative/Goals 25%
- Financial Need 25%
- Scholarship 25%
6. If awarded a Scholarship, the student must be enrolled in college no later than August 1, 2026. Scholarships will NOT BE awarded for the 2027 2028 year of enrollment. If a student is enrolled and then decides not to attend the Fall Semester the scholarship will be null and void.
7. The application and attachments must be emailed to the Department of Texas Education Committee Chair at linda.malsbary@yahoo.com by May 1, 2026 for review and judging. All applicants will receive an email confirmation of receipt of the application and notification by email in June 2026 as to their status on having been awarded a scholarship or not.
Application Requirements (All listed items must be attached to the application!)
1. The General Scholarship application can be found on the ALA Department of Texas website at alatexas.org/programs/education/
2. Completed application form. (Please double-check requirements.)
3. A resume from the applicant, stating qualifications, career goals, major and chosen college. Additionally the resume should include statements of financial support from all their sources not listed on the application, extracurricular activities, service hours, and honors and awards received.
4. Three (3) letters of recommendation.
- From the Principal or Counselor of the school from which he or she is a graduate, or from the advisor or instructor of the current college or university.
- From a representative citizen, certifying to the applicant’s character, Americanism and scholarship.
- From your choice.
5. A CERTIFIED COPY of applicant’s high school grades for the last two (2) years of work or college transcript.
6. Recommendation of the local American Legion Auxiliary Unit President or Unit Education Chairman may be included for additional reference and consideration of support.
Type of Scholarship
Gift Scholarships of $500 each will be given, based on email submissions received prior to the May 1, 2026 deadline. Final determination shall be vested in the Education Chairman and the Committee.
Recipients checks will be mailed to the college or university the applicant will be attending.
