Eligibility

Open to Grade 12 students who are completing the requirements of a high school diploma Applicants must identify as a member or ally of the transgender and gender diverse communities.

Successful applicants are individuals who have made a meaningful contribution to individuals within the transgender and gender-diverse communities.

This contribution might be in the form of volunteering or wider community service, improving the environment within their school, significant impact on an individual classmate or role modelling being a strong and supportive ally, among many others.

Two letters of recommendation are required. At least one letter must be provided by a school official, employer or community-based organization. One letter may also be a personal recommendation if the applicant wishes.

Essay

Applicants are required to submit an original essay of approximately 750 words explaining how their contribution has positively affected the lives of transgender and gender-diverse individuals and the impact it has had on their own life.

Selection & Payment

Selection will be based on the essay, references and volunteerism. Recipients are selected in July and selection will be made by the Skipping Stone board of directors, including a representative from EducationMatters. All applicant contact information will remain confidential during the selection process.  To claim the award, within twelve (12) months of notification of the award, the recipient must be registered in an eligible program of post-secondary study in Canada of at least one-year duration, or an eligible skilled trades or apprenticeship program. Payments are made to the post-secondary institution or program.
