The Taking Flight Scholarship was established in 2009 to encourage Aboriginal high school and post-secondary students wishing to pursue a career in mining. Three $2,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to qualifying students from across Canada. Applications are accepted for the October 15th deadline. Successful candidates will be announced and scholarships will be awarded by December 31st.
Eligibility
Indigenous Peoples including First Nations, Metis, and Inuit who are permanent residents in Canada. Priority will be given to:
- High school students
- Community college students
- Trade school students
Consideration will be given to students who are pursuing or wish to pursue studies in preparation for a trade or profession related to the mining industry (e.g. heavy-duty equipment mechanic, millwright, electrician, process systems and control, instrumentation, carpenter, welder, surveyor, geologist, mine engineer/technologist).
Application Procedures
A complete application package must be submitted by Oct 15, including:
- Application form
- An official, sealed copy of applicant's most recent academic transcript
- Two recommendations and/or reference letters (from teachers, elders, or community leaders)
- A 400-word letter in English, or if the student prefers, in his/her native language. The letter should describe what working in the mining industry means to the applicant, and include significant accomplishments of which they are the most proud.
