Bev Good Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Value: $1,000
Awards Available: 1

This Scholarship was established by Joe and Debbie Showker in memory of Bev Good, a good friend and mentor. Bev Good was a well-respected and admired track referee and official who invested a lifetime developing and working with student athletes. Bev's passion and commitment to excellence provided inspiration to all who knew him. His enthusiasm and joy of the sport as well as his influence in Joe's personal life motivated Joe and Debbie to provide an opportunity for Bev's legacy to live on through annual recognition of student athletes who represent ideals so important to him.

An application will only be accepted if it is submitted by a track coach or an athletic director, not by the athlete.

The purpose of the Scholarship is to support post-secondary education for qualifying graduates who plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university. Students must graduate from a high school located in the cities of Harrisonburg, Staunton, or Waynesboro, or the counties of Rockingham or Augusta.

The Outdoor Track Head Coach or the Athletic Director at an eligible high school may nominate a track athlete, either male or female for the award. ONLY ONE TRACK ATHLETE PER SCHOOL WILL BE CONSIDERED BY THE REVIEW COMMITTEE. Students are also required to answer a few questions. Please allow the student at least a few days for this process.

The scholarship will be awarded to one student who plans to participate in a sanctioned track program of a college or university and has not been awarded a FULL scholarship.

Consideration will be given to the student's character, determination, self-motivation and sportsmanship during competition. Additionally, each coach will submit an essay explaining why this athlete is nominated and why he/she feels the student is deserving of this award and recognition. Only one track athlete (either male or female) from each high school may be nominated.

The essay is the most important aspect of the nomination and will be a large factor during the committee's deliberations.
