The Miami Police Department’s Do The Right Thing (DTRT) Program is in search of graduating high school seniors interested in serving the community as police officers in honor of a beloved officer who passed away in 2011. The Senior Police Executive Angel Calzadilla/Do The Right Thing Police Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Senior Police Executive Calzadilla, a well regarded officer who succumbed to a lifelong private struggle with cystic fibrosis at the age of 48. Do The Right Thing, known for recognizing and rewarding area youths for their positive behavior and actions, is offering the scholarship annually to one high school graduating senior. The scholarship will cover tuition up to $6,000 to attend the City of Miami Police Academy in downtown Miami. Applications are due to the DTRT office at the Miami Police Department on April 15, 2016. The scholarship winner will be announced by June 1, 2016 and the recipient will have up to two years to attend the academy.
“Senior Police Executive Calzadilla served on the Do The Right Thing Board of Directors and spent many years chaperoning the program’s top student winners to London, England,” said Do The Right Thing Executive Director Jodi Atkison. “Not only was he an incredibly caring individual and excellent officer, he was so much fun to be around that our Do The Right Thing kids just loved him.”
