Earl G. Hartman, Sr. and Caroline Millar Hartman Scholarship
Earl and Caroline Hartman came from very humble beginnings. Earl grew up in Ohio in a close, but poor, family. He graduated high school and then completed a 2 year business school degree in 9 months’ time. Caroline’s family was also poor and moved frequently while she was growing up, some 18 times in 16 years, while her dad worked the oil fields around the country and moved the family to where the work was. She and her family settled in Mt. Pleasant in 1930 and she graduated from high school at the top of her class. She became a secretary at a local oil company here in town where she met Earl who worked at the same company as an accountant. They lived in Mt. Pleasant for most of their 42 years of marriage. After Earl died, Caroline continued to live here for 24 years until her death in 2003.
Earl and Caroline Hartman were good people who worked hard to provide a good life for themselves and their family. They knew the importance of a good Catholic-based education, and all six of their children graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. The scholarship presented tonight is given to honor the memory of Earl and Caroline and to recognize their strong belief in the Catholic faith and in Catholic education.
