Each year, Boreal Waters awards more than $800,000 in scholarships to support students across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Made possible by the generosity of individuals, families, and organizations, these scholarships help learners of all ages pursue education, unlock opportunity, and give back to their communities.

Most of our scholarships are available through our universal application which will open in December 2025 and close February 24, 2026.
Who Can Apply?

You may be eligible if you:
- Live in northeast Minnesota or northwest Wisconsin
- Are planning to attend a college, university, community or technical college, or trade school
- Meet criteria related to your academic interests, school, or community involvement
Many scholarships are open to high school seniors, current college students, and adult learners. Even if you're not sure where you fit yet, we encourage you to explore—there’s likely a scholarship for you.
Hubert A. Nelson Scholarship Fund
Hubert A. Nelson was born in Duluth in 1913. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and served with the FBI. He later worked as treasurer of the W. S. Moore Mining Co. in Duluth. He served with the Duluth Development Co., responsible for much of the renovation of downtown Duluth.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants must be graduates of Duluth Denfeld, Duluth East, Harbor City International, Marshall School, Superior Senior High School, Lakeview Christian Academy, Stella Maris Academy, or Maranatha Academy. They must attend either the University of Minnesota Duluth or the University of Wisconsin Superior, demonstrate financial need, and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The field of study must be in Business or Accounting.
