The Winograd family has always felt strongly about philanthropy and education and have supported the Greeley community for more than 50 years with grants and scholarships. The Winograd family's commitment to funding education has been recognized in areas including the University of Northern Colorado, Aims Community College and Greeley/Evans School District 6 that named one of their schools Harold S. Winograd Elementary School.
Harold Winograd owned a steel supply business in Greeley for more than 50 years and was an invaluable asset to the Greeley community. He passed away in December 1999. Florence Winograd, who went back to school when she was in her 40s and earned a degree, said she believed "Getting an education opens doors for the rest of your life where you can do things not just for yourself but for the rest of society. Without an education, you are missing so much,". Mrs. Winograd made many contributions to Greeley and Weld County beginning in 1946 when she began volunteering in schools as she and Harold raised their four sons. Florence passed away in August 2012.
The Winograd Family Scholarship was established by Harold and Florence Winograd to honor a graduating senior from Greeley Central, Greeley West and Northridge High Schools. This is their way of giving back to the Greeley schools for all they did for their sons.
The scholarship is worth $1,200/year and is renewable for three years. The scholarship can only be used at a college, university, or junior college in Colorado.
