Bridgeport is located in Fairfield County. It is the most heavily populated city within the state of Connecticut with a projected population of 144,229 according to the 2010 United States Census. The city of Bridgeport makes up the core of the Greater Bridgeport area. Bridgeport is the 5th biggest city in New England and is part of the Greater New York City Combined Statistical Area. Bridgeport ranks as the 41st largest urban area in the United States.

Amongst the most well-known residents' within the region is the circus-promoter and one time mayor P.T. Barnum. He has built 3 houses within the city of Bridgeport and throughout the winters, houses his circus in town.

Other than parts of Black Rock and Brooklawn, that were at first part of the Fairfield Township, the city of Bridgeport was initially a member of the Stratford Township. Somewhere between 1639 and 1665, the first English settlement on the west bank of the mouth of the Pequonnock River was established. This particular settlement was called Pequonnock. Sometime prior to the year 1777, the village was renamed Newfield. Because more people settled to the West and further inland, the region officially became known as Stratfield in the year 1701. It is speculated that this name emerged from its location between the present townships of Stratford and Fairfield.

The city of Bridgeport was a center of privateering in the American Revolution. During 1800, the village of Newfield was chartered as a district of the city of Bridgeport. The township of Bridgeport and sections of Stratfield became incorporated during 1821. During the year 1836, Bridgeport was finally chartered as a city.

The city of Bridgeport is home to the Frisbie Pie Company. Some argue that because of this, the city of Bridgeport is truly the birthplace of the Frisbee. The first Subway Restaurant was opened in the North End portion of the city of Bridgeport in the year 1965.

The core of the city's economy for a long time was in manufacturing and trade, nonetheless more recently, the service-producing sector with health and business services have grown to become a key factor in the local economy. The city of Bridgeport is trying to expand its manufacturing sector into the global marketplace. In addition, Bridgeport is regarded as amongst the most well-known financial centers in New England.
