The city of Pueblo, Colorado is a Home Rule Municipality and is the county seat of Pueblo County. The city is located at the convergence of the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek. The city of Pueblo is a significant part of the Front Range Urban Corridor and the main city of the Pueblo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Denver lies 166 km to the north of Pueblo.
Pueblo is situated in the semi-arid desert area called the "banana belt". Annual precipitation within the area averages only 305 mm. Pueblo experiences less snow than other major cities within the state of Colorado.
Because of the city's major steel-producing sector, Pueblo has been called the "Steel City". The steel sector in the city of Pueblo is the biggest within the United States.
In the mid-19th century, the name of the township was "Fort Pueblo." The Colorado Gold Rush during the year 1859, led to the settlement of four towns, which ultimately amalgamated to become Pueblo. The city was the site of one of the most devastating floods in the history of the country. The Great Flood of 1921 is amongst the state's most well known natural disasters. A lot of people died and the city of Pueblo sustained millions of dollars in damage. The Historic Arkansas River Project (HARP) features displays and information about the Pueblo Flood.
The 20th century ushered in the era of steel, and Pueblo's economy relied a lot on steel production. More recently, the city of Pueblo has created an industrial park and a revitalized downtown in an effort to diversify. A lot of aviation and electronics companies are currently situated here. The major employment sectors in the city are government, education, construction, healthcare and the leisure and hospitality. Service jobs provide more than 80 percent of employment. Many residents are still employed in steel fabrication. Newer sources of employment consist of telemarketing call centers, manufacturing, aviation and electronics companies. Numerous Pueblo residents commute to the Colorado Springs area to work.
The biggest healthcare employers within the Pueblo area are St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, Parkview Medical Center, and Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo. Other major employers consist of Pueblo School System, Pueblo County, Convergys Corporation, Trane, Rocky Mountain Steel Mills and Walmart.
