Stockton is an ethnically and culturally diverse community that continues to grow steadily. With a population of 280,000, Stockton is considered the 13th largest city within California. Sixty miles to the west is San Francisco Bay, and eighty three miles west is San Francisco itself. The city is in a somewhat central location, with Sacramento situated just forty five miles to the south. The San Joaquin Delta waterway unites the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers to San Francisco Bay.
Recently, Stockton City has experienced a huge economic development with a special focus on revitalizing the downtown area. There are some projects either currently planned or being built, like for instance retail, apartments, housing, a hotel, a baseball stadium, and an indoor arena. The arena will host four major sports teams: Stockton Thunder Hockey, California Cougar Soccer, Stockton Ports Minor Baseball and the Stockton Lightning Area2 Football. At the gateways of the city, Stockton is building various entertainment and retail centers. In the year 2003 the City Centre Cinemas, the sixteen screen movie theatre, was developed.
The financial system of Stockton was originally based almost exclusively on agriculture. Ever since that time, the city has very much diversified, with manufacturing plants and telecommunications becoming more common. The strong ties with agriculture will gradually become more and more essential as the concentration on attempting to look for a renewable energy increases.
The land is fairly reasonably priced and the nearness of the transportations routes have enabled the businesses of Pac-West Telecommunications, Golden State Lumber Company and Duraflame to build their regional operations in Stockton. The city is even perfect for those businesses based on renewable energy; among the biggest receivers of wind turbines is the Port of Stockton. There is a very reliable and efficient rail system within the city, which helps to make the distribution of products go efficiently. Even with the bio diesel and ethanol plants built near the Port, there is still over two thousand acres of free space obtainable
Stockton is presently working on developing green sustainable resources. Secondary educational institutions and high schools are working together with the local government to educate the people regarding the renewable energy industry with the hopes that a solution to the quickly diminishing oil supply can be found.
