San Bernardino is a city known for its beautiful scenery and ethnic diversity. The combination of influences from emigrants, ranging from Native Americans to Spanish Missionaries, has created a city that is culturally diverse and interesting. The city was named by Father Dumetz, a Franciscan missionary, during the year 1810. The city itself is situated south of the San Bernardino Mountains and west of the lower desert. It is currently the county seat of San Bernardino County and hosts a population of over 205,000.

The economy of San Bernardino is concentrated in government, services and retail trades. In the city, there are all together ninety seven plus jobs provided, twenty thousand of these are government jobs, sixteen thousand in retail, and 13,200 within education.

Situated at the intersection of the I-10, I-215, and SR-210 freeways, the city of San Bernardino has a strategic location. The region is even close to the Cajon and San Gorgonio passes. Within the city lies the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway's Intermodal fright transport yard, and the Pacific Motor Trucking and the Yellow Freight Systems' cross-docking trucking center. There are some warehouses situated close to the San Bernardino International Airport for large corporations, like for example Mattel and Kohl's.

Located close to the Santa Ana River and along Hospitality Lane is the Riverfront District. Within the city, is has been the economic development hub for the past couple of years. There are a lot of big restaurants, retailers, hotels and office buildings which are constructed here rather than downtown.

In 1994 the Norton Air Force Base was closed, causing San Bernardino's financial system to nearly collapse. The jobless rate grew to 12 percent because of more than ten thousand people losing their jobs and as a result numerous neighborhoods were emptied. The area still hasn't entirely recovered and people within one mile of the centre of the city have a meager median income of $20,480.
