Salinas is currently the biggest city within Monterey County with a population of 148,350 and is located only eight miles from the Pacific Ocean. The mouth of the Salinas River lies approximately 10 miles west-northwest from the city. It is roughly fifty two feet above sea level. This suburban city has the nickname of "Salad Bowl of the United States" since 80 percent of all the lettuce produced within the United States is produced here.

There is a large variety of housing to be found within Salinas for all income levels. It has everything from luxury homes to low level apartments, which depends on the area.

Due to the very mild type of weather, the floral industry along with vineyards thrive here. The city is known for its agricultural focus. It was even the birthplace of John Steinbeck, who has ever since won a Nobel Prize in Literature. Many of his novels were inspired or set in the city.

The temperature within the city ranges in the winter is about 60 degrees all through the day and 30 degrees Fahrenheit at night, whilst in the summertime is about ten degrees higher at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which lowers to roughly 50 degrees Fahrenheit at nighttime. The precipitation averages around 14.4 inches of rain per year.

Within the financial system, there are around 55% of the jobs being of the blue collar kind, with 45 percent white collar. The sales and office management () and various associated occupations (21.4%), are the two top occupation sectors in the city. Fishing, forestry and farming (14.4%) and transportation, production and material moving occupations (14.4%) account for a lot of the various work in the city. Only 9.1% of the residents worked in construction and maintenance. Then again, various individuals believe this number is skewed. These numbers do not comprise farm workers who migrate and work for approximately nine months of the year.

Local agriculture companies, like for instance Taylor Farms, Tanimura & Antle, and D'Arrigo Bros. employ a large percent of the residents, as do other companies including HSBC and Fresh Express.
