Within South Carolina, Charleston City was made the county seat of Charleston County during 1901. The original name of the city was Charles Towne from as far back as 1670, when it was name after King Charles II of England. In 1680, the town moved to Oyster Point, its present location, from Albemarle Point on Ashley River's west bank. The new name of "Charleston," was adopted during 1783. Charleston City was the 5th largest city in North America during 1690. The city remained amongst the 10 largest cities in the USA through the 1840 census.

Charleston City has been referred to as "the Holy City" because of its prominence of churches populating the low-rise cityscape. It was among the original 13 colonies to provide religious tolerance, even if this was limited to non-Catholics. As a result, a lot of Huguenots found their way to the city of Charleston. Several steeples dot the skyline of the city of Charleston.

The city of Charleston is situated near the mid-point of the South Carolina coastline at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. These two rivers merge together and flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The Charleston Harbor is located between the Atlantic Ocean and downtown Charleston.

The city of Charleston serves as a main tourist destination. There are various hotel chains, bed and breakfasts, luxury hotels and inns within the vicinity. The city of Charleston is known for its award-winning restaurants and quality shopping. There are two shipping terminals in the city of Charleston. They are both owned and operated by the South Carolina Ports Authority. Furthermore, they are part of the fourth biggest container seaport on the East Coast and during 2009, likewise the 13th biggest container seaport in North America.

The very first shots of the Civil War were fired within Fort Sumter, a place Charleston is home to. The city is likewise home to Fort Moultrie which was an important spot during the Revolutionary War since it was the place of a critical British defeat. Across the river within neighboring Mount Pleasant, Patriot's Point is located. It is home to numerous naval vessels including the USS Yorktown.

There are other historical museums and sites in the area such as the Children's Museum of the Lowcounty, the Charleston Museum and the Karpeles Manuscript Museum. The city also houses the American Military Museum, Postal Museum, Summerville Dorchester Museum, Edisto Island Museum, the Citadel Museum, the Shem Creek Maritime Museum and the Confederate Museum.
