Spokane is the county seat of Spokane County within Washington State. Situated on the Spokane River within Eastern Washington only 32 km from the Idaho-Washington border, it is the metropolitan center of the region. The Canada-U.S. border lies 180 km to the north.
Spokane started as a trading post in 1810 with the establishment of the North West Company's Spokane House. The settlement was the center of the fur trade between the Cascades and the Rockies. Every month of February, the Spokane International Film Festival showcases independent films from all-around the globe. During June, the biggest 3-on-3 basketball tournament within the globe happens in Spokane. Referred to as Hoopfest, this particular tournament attracts participants of different ages. The July activity called "100 Years of Motorcycles" is not only for custom bike builders and motorcycle enthusiasts. The event features musical performers and television celebrities.
