Richardson is considered a suburb of Dallas and is situated within Dallas County. The Telecom Corridor, a vast technology center packed with some prominent technology companies, is located here. Among the more known companies include Ericsson, Nortel, AT&T, Tellabs, Texas Instruments and Alcatel-Lucent.

The area of around the city of Richardson was inhabited firstly by the Caddo and the Comanche tribes. During the 1840s, the area was then settled by pioneers from Tennessee and Kentucky. It wasn't until following the Civil War that a railroad was built in the region. William J. Wheeler was the man who donated the piece of land which will eventually become the city of Richardson. He declined the opportunity for the city to be named after him, so the city was named after E.H. Richardson who was a railroad contractor.

The city of Richardson was given a charter in 1873. The very first telephones and electric lights were introduced to the city in the year 1910. The first schoolhouse was built in the year 1914 and is currently used as the Richardson Independent School District administrative offices. Prior to the second World War, the population was about 740. It expanded exponentially after that. In 1954 the U.S. Highway 75 opened, which resulted in the city of Richardson transforming from a city of agriculture to a city full of houses and shopping centers.

The Telecom Corridor is the place of The University of Texas at Dallas, together with several famous technology businesses. The school is well-known for its courses in engineering, cognitive sciences, natural sciences, and computer science, as well as its graduate programs in political economy, international management and economics. Students have the chance to get master degrees along with be admitted into doctoral programs. The world renowned Alan G. MacDiarmid Nano Tech Institute is located at the university.

The depression which was felt by other parts of the US from the years 2005 to 2009 was not felt in Richardson City. In fact, Richardson City felt a substantial increase in its economy. The state tax collection went from $21 million to $24.7 million and property value increased from $8.3 billion to $9.5 billion.

The largest office campus development in the past 25 years is a 15 story, 1,000,000 square foot regional head office. More than 3,100 people are working at this location. There have been a few other key relocations or corporate expansions in the city of Richardson, including MetroPCS, Bank of America Financial Services, Yahoo, Fujitsu Transaction Solutions, and Halff Associates.
