Kettering, Ohio is situated near Dayton and lies in both Greene and Montgomery Counties. With over 56,000 residents it is the largest suburb in the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kettering is named after Charles F. Kettering, inventor of the automobile self-starter, who resided there from 1914 to 1958. The city was incorporated during 1955 from the former Van Buren Township.
The area was first settled by John Patterson during the year 1798, but the Town of Van Buren wasn't established until the year 1841. The township later changed the name to the Village of Kettering in 1952, to honor the local inventor. From 1970 to 1980 the population dropped because of the decline of manufacturing, resulting in huge layoffs at the General Motors facilities during the 1980s.
Kettering residents benefit from the city's numerous recreational activities and parks. The famous Kettering Recreation Complex is busy year round. Skate Plaza, an extensive skateboard park, was built as a collaboration between Kettering and Rob Dyrdek, a professional skateboarder who grew up in the city.
