Elizabeth, New Jersey is located in the states Union County. Now, the city of Elizabeth has a population nearing 125,000 residents, according to the latest 2010 census. By population numbers, it is the 4th biggest city within New Jersey. From the 2000 Census population of 120,568 there was an increase of 4,401 inhabitants or around 3.7% by the year 2010.

Elizabeth was named one of the "50 Greenest Cities in the USA" in 2008 by Popular Science magazine. It was the only New Jersey city to be chosen.

When the town was originally inhabited in 1664 by its English settlers, the community was officially known as Elizabethtown. The name was selected to honor the wife of noted colonial proprietor, Sir George Carteret. Elizabeth was the first capital of New Jersey. The name officially changed to become the city of Elizabeth during 1855 upon its incorporation.

The very first major industry within the region to support thousands of jobs was the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Since World War II, the city has seen considerable growth in its transportation facilities. The Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, normally referred to as Port Elizabeth, has become the main container ship facility serving the northeastern quadrant of North America. Moreover, it is amongst the busiest ports in the whole world.

There are more than a dozen landmarks and historical sites in Midtown Elizabeth. In recent years, the Elizabeth Public Library has undergone major upgrades. This elegant structure was a gift from Andrew Carnegie during the beginning of the 20th century. Boxwood Hall is one more historic location. This was the former house of Jonathan Dayton, the youngest person to sign the Constitution as well as the house of the President of the Continental Congress, Elias Boudinot. Amongst the largest and oldest operating theatres within the state is the historic Ritz Theatre. This fantastic building dates back to the year 1926 and has much history attached.

Called the Belcher Ogden Mansion, the former residence of Royal Governor Jonathan Belcher is located nearby. It represents the last of the original Royal Governor's mansions in the country. There are many parades and yearly festivals which celebrate the ethnic diversity of the city of Elizabeth. For instance, the Elizabeth Latin Carnival is held at the start of September on an annual basis and brings hundreds of thousands of tourists. Other famous events include the Pride Day in the Port, Portugal Day, Unity Day and Julyfest. The yearly Tour De Elizabeth is held each and every Sunday prior to Memorial Day and it is a bike tour of the entire city of Elizabeth.

The Newark Liberty International Airport is a really busy place and parts of it are actually in Elizabeth. The city of Elizabeth also features the famous Little Jimmy's Italian Ices since the year 1932, Jersey Gardens outlet mall, the Elizabeth Center and Loews Theatre. All of these ventures bring millions in revenue every year.

Elizabeth, along with Linden, is home to the Bayway Refinery. This is a ConocoPhillips refining facility which produces about 230,000 barrels or 37,000m3 on a daily basis, supplying petroleum based products to the New York/New Jersey areas.
