The North Carolina city of Winston-Salem is situated in the Piedmont Triad, that is an economic region that includes the cities of High Point and Greensboro. Winston-Salem serves as the seat of Forsyth County. Situated approximately 100 miles west of the state capital, the city of Raleigh, the city of Winston-Salem sits approximately 80 miles northeast of Charlotte. Winston-Salem is serviced by U.S. Routes 52 and 421, Interstate I-40 and State Highway 8.

The town of Salem was founded during 1766, first serving as a congregational place for the Moravian church. The town rapidly grew into a hub for entrepreneurial activity and trading. The nearby Winston town was founded in 1849 and named in tribute to Joseph Winston, a local Revolutionary War hero. Both Winston and Salem became prominent centers in the newly created Forsyth County, with booming ventures within the furniture, textile and tobacco markets. By the latter part of the 1850s, the two towns were connected to form Winston-Salem. Among the globe's largest tobacco companies, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, began within the city of Winston-Salem during the year 1874. Ever since that time, the Reynolds family has played an important part within the city's development. In the early 20th century, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts started its very first store within Winston-Salem and Piedmont Airlines established headquarters there.

Medical research is presently a prominent industry within Winston-Salem. The city's largest employer is Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
