Cambridge, Massachusetts is situated in Middlesex County and located within the Greater Boston Area. The city was named in honor of the University of Cambridge within England, which was a vital center of the Puritan theology which was embraced by the town's founding citizens. An inhabitant of the city of Cambridge is affectionately called a "Cantabrigian."

Two of the world's most prominent universities, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are located within Cambridge. In the year 2010, the population of the city was 105,162 based on the U.S. Census, making it the 5th most heavily populated city in the state of Massachusetts behind Boston, Worcester, Lowell and Springfield. Lowell is one county seat of Middlesex County and Cambridge is the other.

The region was settled during the year 1630 by a group of Puritan settlers from England. Originally, the region was named "Newtowne." Harvard College, established facilities in 1636, that prompted the move to a more appropriate and new name. "Cambridge" was chosen as the formal name because of the familiarity which many of the settlers had with Cambridge University within England. During the year 1636, the township was incorporated and during the year 1846 it became a city after the first township of Old Cambridge merged with two villages East Cambridge and Cambridge Port.

In the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries, the city had a major industrial focus mainly centered on factories such as glass and furniture businesses. The present emphasis has shifted to explore more technology-based options consisting of biotechnology research, electronics and software. Today, Cambridge City is a really vibrant college-influenced community which enjoys social diversity, a strong mix of culture, technological innovation and intellectual vitality.

The biggest companies in the city of Cambridge are the educational facilities of MIT and Harvard. Together they hire over 20,000 individuals. The city of Cambridge is also home to different legendary technology firms like Bolt, Akamai, Analog Devices Beranek and Newman or BBN Technologies which is now a part of Raytheon, Polaroid, Symbolics, Thinking Machines General Radio or also known as GenRad and the Lotus Development Corporation who are currently a part of IBM.

Most of the tech companies within the region over the years, have had to relocate or move and sometimes even shut down their companies due to the declines and growths of the technology marketplace. Lotus, Polaroid and Arthur D. Little were all examples of top employers in the Cambridge region with more than 1000 workers. Within a few years they declined or disappeared. By 2005, Harvard, MIT and health care and biotechnology firms like for instance Genzyme, Novartis, Biogen and Idec dominated the economy of the city. There are biotechnology firms located around Kendall Square and East Cambridge. Decades ago these places were the center for manufacturing enterprises in the city of Cambridge. The University Park at MIT is likewise another new development located in another former manufacturing region.

Microsoft Research, Google and IBM Research all maintain offices within Cambridge. The video game developer Harmonix Music Systems is likewise based in Central Square. Additionally, the city is the New England headquarters for Time Warner Cable and Miramax Films.
