Pickering is a part of the Greater Toronto Area, and is located in Southern Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1791 as a part of York County, and its name was derived from Pickering, North Yorkshire in North Yorkshire, England. The first activity of the town was primarily agricultural, with local rivers creating water-power so as to operate local mills. It was integrated during the year 1811 and became a part of the newly-formed County of Ontario during the year 1852. The years that follow saw Pickering Village grow along the Kingston Road near Duffins Creek. It was then separated from the township and was incorporated as a village in the year 1958.
