The city of Niagara Falls is a Canadian city renowned for views of the Niagara Falls, which are two big waterfalls on the Niagara River in Southern Ontario. On the other side of the river is the American city with the same name of Niagara Falls, New York. The waterfalls are referred to as the Horseshoe and American falls, are best seen from the Canadian side of the river. This has made Niagara Falls, Ontario, a prime tourist attraction.

Niagara Falls was incorporated on June 12, 1903. At present it has a population of around eighty two thousand. Then again, the city swells as millions of visitors arrive each year to witness the natural spectacle. A well-developed tourist area exists along the gorge and the falls. This tourist area is particularly concentrated along the tourist promenade at the brink of the falls.

Besides the natural spectacle, Niagara Falls has plenty of high-rise hotels, souvenir shops, observation towers, theatres and casinos. These areas of the city are dominated by colourful neon billboards and advertisements. Further from the falls, visitors are attracted by the historic sites from the War of 1812 and golf courses.

Drawn by the plentiful and inexpensive source of hydroelectric power, a lot of electro-chemical and electro-metallurgical industries businesses moved into the area during the early to mid-20th century. In the 1970s and 80s, industries started leaving because of the increasing global competition in the manufacturing sector and economic recession. The city needed to depend increasingly on tourism in order to generate employment and revenue. The city attracted American visitors due to its geographical advantage in viewing the falls, and because of Ontario's lower legal drinking age as opposed to New York State's. Niagara Falls became popular with 19 and 20-year-olds who can drink alcohol legally by coming across the border.

Gambling soon became another popular draw, when, in the mid-1990s, Casino Niagara opened. An economic boom followed, due to the development of numerous luxury hotels and a lot more casinos. The casino business did well in drawing tourists from the United States due to the lower-valued Canadian dollar. Even though casinos have opened on the American side, and Canadian currency is now valued higher as opposed to the American dollar, the Ontario side still has a lot more to offer than Niagara Falls, New York. The Canadian city's lively downtown and a lot of attractions continue to draw in both American and Canadian tourists.

The most recent revitalization project in Niagara Falls was centred on the Clifton Hill and Fallsview areas, where a major arts and culture district is being developed. This new project comprises art galleries, boutiques, cafes and bistros, and the refurbishment of the historic Seneca Theatre.
