Stephenville was once home to Ernest Harmon AFB, which in 1941 to 1946, was run by the United States Army Air Force. In the 1940's, the government of the United States started a massive investment in its base, helping St. George's Bay and Stephenville area to grow and flourish. Its population likewise grew from several hundreds to into a modern town of more than 5,000 by the mid 1950's.
