Stephenville was once home to Ernest Harmon AFB, which in 1941 to 1946, was run by the United States Army Air Force. In the 1940's, the government of the United States started a massive investment in its base, helping St. George's Bay and Stephenville area to grow and flourish. Its population likewise grew from several hundreds to into a modern town of more than 5,000 by the mid 1950's. Its population doubled more in the coming years, as a result of the provincial government's force resettlement policy concentrated on the residents of its outports. Once the base was closed, the government took over the facilities and converted the air field into the Stephenville Airport.

The Newfoundland artisans and artists make high quality arts and crafts, and their works are sold and featured at craft shops and studios. Prior to 1941, Stephenville's main means of earning a living were through fishing and farming. This soon changed after the U.S.A made the city of Stephenville a location for refueling American aircrafts that were on their way to Europe. This move has significantly contributed to the economic growth of the city of Stephenville, and had helped change it into a boom-town overnight. The population of the city of Stephenville grew, and numerous buildings were constructed to keep up with the growth of the economy. Even when the base closed, other trades grew, such as small medical services, schools, government offices, recreation facilities, hotels, restaurants, and wholesale companies. Nowadays, the city of Stephenville has become the central moving force in the economic activities within the Bay St. George - Port au Port region.
