St. Stephen's University

St. Stephen’s University was established in 1975 by six students and a small group of faculty and staff. It first purchased its building in downtown St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and has continued to reside in this location for four decades now. The College remains distinctly small. It prefers to remain that way, as it wants to enhance close relationships among the faculty, students, and staff which can foster a maturity of character that goes well beyond the confines of the classroom walls. Today, the College is still rooted in Christian teachings and values. ... continued below

About St. Stephen's University

Campus: Facilities, Residence and Location

St. Stephen’s University has two historic 19th century buildings: Park Hall and Governor Todd Mansion. Park Hall was built at the turn of the 19th century, and it overlooks the St. Croix River that separates St. Stephen from Calais, Maine. It houses academic facilities and the University Chapel. Governor Todd Mansion is only a block away from Park Hall. It was once home to the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, and today, it provides apartment buildings for staff members and students. Other buildings that can be seen are the N.D. Lea Ministry Centre, which provides residential and study facilities for full time and part-time Ministry Studies students. St. Croix Hall is beside Park Hall, and it gives additional classroom and residence facilities for Arts students.

Student Services and Student Life

The University focuses on serving students in these areas: Worship, Volunteer, Recreation, Arts, and Kitchen. Worship at SSU is concentrated on the Scriptures and Christian values and beliefs. The Chapel is where the SSU community (students, staff members, and faculty members) gather and worship together. This activity is done thrice a week in the third floor of the chapel. Aside from the Chapel, SSU hosts bigger worship events, and everyone is invited to participate in the event. Local churches are also available near the University, and SSU encourages everyone to actively participate in any local church. Volunteer opportunities can also be an option to the students, and they can choose from among these to lend their services to: local schools; family resource center; local nursing homes; homes for mentally challenged; Charlotte County Boys & Girls club; coaching local sports teams; coffee houses; and being elves during the town’s Christmas festivities.

Academic Programs

The College offers two avenues of education: Ministry and Arts. The Liberal Arts program includes a Foundation Year Diploma and the four year Bachelor of Arts Degree, such as History, Ancient History and Religious Studies, Philosophy and Literature. The usual classes are small, with just around 8-15 students. The Department of Ministry Studies offer a good training background for people who want to have a career in church or mission. Some of its programs include Master in Ministry, Bachelor of Ministry, Diploma in Christian Studies, and Diploma in Ministry Studies. It also has modular programs which are taken for two weeks at a time for three separate modules that are offered every spring and fall. A fourth module is a two-week trip to Turkey, Israel, or Greece. Some of its modular programs include the Master in Ministry by Module and Diploma in Ministry Studies. The University also offers Diploma in Community Corrections Ministry, which is offered in cooperation with the Chaplaincy Department of Corrections in Canada. It is designed to help prepare the volunteers and community chaplains in dealing with ex-offenders and their families in a more effective way.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

St. Stephen’s University guarantees scholarship programs for undergraduates who have achieved an average of 85% to 89%. They will receive $500 in total scholarship support.
