Alice W. Rooke Scholarship

A $5,000 scholarship awarded to one student who has been accepted into or who are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (no pre–med, veterinarian, or physician assistant) at approved, accredited medical schools, colleges, and universities. The scholarship is not automatically renewable; however, applicant may reapply for up to four years.

Application Requirements

Applicants must be citizens of the United States to apply for a scholarship offered by the DAR Scholarship Committee.  Applicants must also attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States. DAR chapter sponsorship is not required, however, applicants may want to reach out to a DAR chapter in their area for help with their applications.

Important Information

  • Applicants should submit their scholarship applications using the DAR's online process from November 1 through January 31 at 11:59 pm (Hawaii Time).
  • Access the DAR Scholarship Committee's online scholarship application portal online. 
  • The scholarship application portal is not to be used when applying for the the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contests. The scholarship application must be sent to different addresses for processing.

Tips for Organizing and Preparing an Online Scholarship Application

Applicants should review the following information and use the application checklist online to organize and prepare their on-line scholarship application:

  • Enter and upload all of the required scholarship application information using the on-line application process (eg. personal statement, transcripts, activities, proof of citizenship).
  • Please do not submit personal photographs.  Inclusion of an applicant's photograph in any section of the application will result in disqualification.
  • Please do not submit handwritten documents. Inclusion of handwriting in any section of the application will result in disqualification.
  • Individuals providing recommendations will be able to submit their information confidentially through the on-line application portal once applicants have set up their scholarship profile using the scholarship application submission process.
  • Applicants should obtain and submit a copy of their school transcript.  Applicants selected as scholarship recipients will be contacted to provide an official transcript which will be sent to the DAR headquarters.
  • Check the listing of scholarships on the DAR website for special requirements for specific scholarships such as financial need information or letters of acceptance for special programs like nursing or medicine.  
  • Please direct any specific scholarship-related questions to the National Vice Chairman listed with each scholarship on the DAR Scholarship public website.

Application Checklist for Students

  • All submitted information is either typed or computer-generated.
  • Statement of 1,000 words or less setting forth your career objectives.
  • Most recent copy of your high school transcript or college grades (as applicable). Major must be indicated on your most recent transcript where specific major required.  Home-schooled students must include transcripts for grade nine through current year.
  • All scholarships with a minimum grade point average (GPA) are based on a 4.0 scaled or the equivalent GPA on the scale used by the applicable educational institution.
  • Recommendations (at least two but not to exceed four from high school or college now attending).  Recomendations should convey your ability, work habits, integrity, character, potential, and volunteer activities.
  • List of your extra-curricular activities, honors received, and scholastic achievements (one side of an 8 1/2 inch x 11 inch piece of paper).
  • Photocopy of your United States citizenship: birth certificate, naturalization papers, or information page of United States Passport.  Cover your photograph.  If listed, please blackout social security numbers.
  • Information required by specific scholarships such as financial need information; or a letter of your acceptance into special program or transcript stating you are in a special program like nursing or medicine.
