EmPOWERED to Serve Scholars

Scholarship Value: $5,000
Awards Available: 10

The EmPOWERED Scholars program awards scholarships to enrolled undergraduate students who volunteer in their communities to use toward their education expenses. Scholars give their time to community-based organizations, student-led organizations and other groups that address food insecurity, safe housing, job opportunities, access to health care and other conditions that can result in health disparities.

In addition to the financial aid, EmPOWERED Scholars are invited to participate in speaking engagements and media opportunities arranged by the American Heart Association.

Over $200k in scholarships has been given by the American Heart Association since 2018.

39 scholars representing more than 20 different colleges and universities have benefited from EmPOWERED Scholars to date.

Three generous financial funders, Wendy Zheng, Woman’s Heart Coalition and Becton Dickinson will support EmPOWERED Scholars this year.

Who is eligible to apply?

All currently enrolled college freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are working to improve community health and wellness are eligible to apply. Previous applicants’ efforts to improve health equity have included advocating for access to healthy food, volunteering at a health clinic, working in a student health program and fundraising for a cause that promotes health equity.

Is there a GPA requirement?

Must have a passing GPA of 2.0 or higher and be in good standing with the college or university. Past scholars and applicants have majored in public health, exercise physiology, dietetics, biology, chemistry, sociology, public affairs, political science and pre-med.

Are graduate students eligible?

No, these scholarships are open only to undergraduates.

I’m a high school senior starting college next fall. Am I eligible to apply?

No, the scholarships are open only to current undergraduate students. We encourage you to apply once you’re enrolled in college.

Are these scholarships only for U.S. citizens and permanent residents?

We welcome all students currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university, including undocumented students and those who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

What are the benefits of becoming an EmPOWERED Scholar?

In addition to receiving a $5,000 college scholarship, scholars become part of the EmPOWERED to Serve network of ambassadors and alumni. Scholars also have the opportunity to formally represent their regional American Heart Association office, and they receive invitations to special events such as the EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator finale.

If I’m not selected, are there other opportunities to be involved with the American Heart Association?

Yes! Please consider becoming an EmPOWERED to Serve ambassador. Our ambassadors help advance the AHA’s efforts promoting health justice and empowerment. If you’re an activist, community leader, health care professional, young professional or social entrepreneur with a passion for health equity, we invite you to become an EmPOWERED to Serve ambassador.
