Chris King was a percussionist in the LHS Band from 2011-2015. He died in April, 2016. Chris thoroughly enjoyed his years in the LHS Band and the friendships he made with other band members. In the journal that his closet friends in band prepared in his memory, Chris was described as funny, goofy, entertaining, cool, and even eccentric! But more importantly, they described him as kind, helpful, accepting of others, never willing to put others down, one to befriend underclassmen, and one to divert attention from those feeling embarrassed.
To honor Chris' life, his parents have established the Chris King Memorial Scholarship. This IS NOT a scholarship based on academic achievement or musical skill. Instead, it IS a scholarship based on character and only those that exhibit Chris' most important character traits should be nominated. Only seniors and juniors in the LHS Band or Color Guard are eligible for the scholarship. Recipients will be chosen from nominations made by members of the LHS Band and Color Guard, regardless of academic class and all are encouraged to nominate a candidate. Please submit your nominations on the form below by Sunday, April 14, 2019.
Two $1,100 scholarships will be awarded each year. The Chris King Memorial Scholarship fund is established with the Cobb County Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The foundation will distribute the scholarships directly to the recipient's qualified 2 or 4 year college in the form of a credit for tuition, books, or fees. Since a recipient might qualify for other scholarships (e.g., GA HOPE) that might already cover their tuition in full, recipients can decide when to use the funds and how much they wish to use at any time, up to the scholarship total.
