The purpose of the Frank L. Barrows and Frank L. Barrows II Memorial Scholarship is to honor the memories of Frank L. Barrows and Frank L Barrows II by awarding a college scholarship to a student from Eveleth-Gilbert Senior High School. The scholarship was created by Frank Jr's parents in 2014 to memorialize the life of their son. The Barrows Scholarship is included in the Eveleth Area Community Foundation Fund's family of funds.
For a student to be eligible to apply for the scholarship, he or she must be a senior at Eveleth-Gilbert Senior High School; shall have a minimum GPA of 3.0; and a relatively high level of financial need. Finally s/he must intend to attend a four year or two year college or technical school immediately after graduation from high school.
Frank L. Barrows was born in Eveleth on May of 1931 to Hazel and Kenneth Barrows. Frank attended Eveleth schools, where he excelled on the swim team and graduated in 1949. He attended Eveleth Community College for a short time and enlisted in the Navy in 1950. Frank was honorably discharged in 1954, after serving during the Korean War.
Awards Given from Fund
One scholarship of $500~1000/year, co-payable to the student and institution, will be awarded each year. Generally, this annual award is divided into two installments--half for fall, half for spring.
